Meet Featured Artist Stefan Bleekrode who works and lives in the north of Holland and has been a full time artist since 2012.

“On paper I recreate the cities I’ve seen travelling through Europe and North America. In my studio I minutely draw, based on memory and quick watercolour sketches famous and little known cities and towns in fine lines and carefully rendered watercolour washes. Already at the age of ten I began doing these drawings after I’d seen Paris.”

“Over the years my drawing style became ever more detailed and the range of place which captured my interest grew steadily. Also there’s an increased interest visible in perspective and light. Depending on the size of each piece, it takes from several weeks and up to a year or longer to finish a drawing.”

“Places I love to draw include London, New York, Venice, Budapest and Milan but also lesser known cities such as Ghent, Genoa, Naples and Bucharest. Currently I’m working on a 1.15 meter wide night view of Manhattan.”

I am a fine artist and illustrator known for a diverse approach to creating images of fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

My art has been used in packaging and advertising, as well as for awards. My best known art is my detailed pen and ink, acrylic and watercolor images of tropical fish. Many of my subjects have scarcely been depicted in art despite their popularity in the aquarium and vivarium hobbies! I am currently creating a large collection of works to be displayed in several venues during 2013-2014.

I am very connected to my subjects as I have worked in public aquariums and zoos, the aquarium and pet industry and as a conservationist and naturalist for at least 25 years!

I create art in many mediums but find the contrast of light and dark with my pen and ink series to be the most effortless to create and yet most challenging to “communicate”. Digital Art provides extraordinary detail and embellishment, watercolors and acrylics allow for mood and physiological influence through color, and 3D mixed media shouts to senses, but black and whites evoke a unique measure for me to access and accentuate.

My art is a reflection of my relationship and reference for life, nature and connections. As an artist, I am also an observer with a voice and manifest not only images, but also energies of thought and provoking a consciousness and awareness in my audience with a hope to awaken a persons appreciation and curiosity of a simple item, a concept or a social movement. An Artist can inspire imaginative connections between simplicity and complexity and there is endless inspiration for that in Nature. We are all innately connected to Nature and art is a universal language.

An Artist can dissect details, communicate observations of information, reveal realities of assumed illusions, portray imaginations and dreams of ourselves, and explore interconnection and individuality contrasts.
